Despite being a long-time theatre stalwart well known around Sydney community theatre and a regular audience member, Brian’s first appearance at The Guild Theatre was in Our Town in 2021. Fifty one years ago, whilst on a two year contract in Suva, he appeared as George in a Fiji Arts Club production of Our Town. His love of the play and the chance to work with director Lyn Lee, whom he first met in 1961, was enough impetus for him to ‘throw my hat in the ring’ for this production. He says, ‘I have seen many shows at the Guild. I love, and believe it is important to support community theatre.’
Brian played his first role in 1962 as Stanley in Noel Coward’s Still Life. Since then he has appeared in countless shows and played many iconic roles but he says his favourite production was when he played Tevye in Fiddler on the Roof.
Brian is an avid theatre goer and has spent a great deal of his life working in community theatre, both on stage and in production, mainly in musical productions. His wife, Dianne, was also involved for many years. He says it makes it so much easier if a spouse understands what enormous commitment is required to be involved . He also confesses to being border-line obsessive about music and spends a great deal of time poring through his collection. His other hobby is movie watching. His father used to call him ‘Mr Hoyt.’ Enough said!!!!
‘I believe the arts, in general, is important to the nation. Working in community theatre provides a creative outlet for many, many people. Involvement in community theatre is a wonderful chance for those interested in the theatre to connect with the arts and has many social benefits, also.’ – Brian McGann
